with regard to the bullet points:
• even if the site's URL is www.brainking.com, the user can still type a 'b' or 'br' or some such to bring it up in the browser's history. so this point is moot. • people who put "www." in front of email addresses need to learn not to do that (perhaps through the gradual realization that they've never gotten any email). it's not brainking's job to protect such people from the fallout of their own ignorance. doing so doesn't help anyone - it only perpetuates their ignorance. • the third bullet point seems to me to be arguing in favor of using both brainking.com and www.brainking.com - so that every link to the site will increase brainking's rank in the search engines regardless of whether it includes "www." (as it is likely to if the link was put there by anyone other than brainking admins - since "www." is assumed by most people to be part of every URL). that's my thinking at least... Comments (4)
Mmmmmm, interesting response. So, what is your point? We should promote both domains equally?

well, i'm sure you know a lot more than i do about how the technical aspects of it work, but my point is that the ideal situation would be for it not to matter whether people (and search engines) think the domain starts with "www." or not, but for every reference to serve brainking, no matter which way it's typed. you've obviously already held up your end of that deal by causing www.brainking.com to redirect to *brainking.com*...so the main stickler is your third bullet point. regarding that: is the converse true? in other words, those engines that don't recognize www.brainking.com as being the same as their registered record of brainking.com - would they by chance recognize brainking.com as being what they're looking for if their record said *www.brainking.com*?
if they would, then it seems to me the thing to do would be to register the site with the search engines as www.brainking.com and just let people refer to it how they may. if they wouldn't...well then those search engines are just making webmasters' lives difficult. i think the best solution - though it wouldn't be an immediate one - would be to campaign to get those engines to at least offer the option to tell them that www.whatever.com = *whatever.com*. fix that problem at its source rather than try to work around it. as i said, there's a lot about the technical aspects of all this that i'm sure i don't understand. am i overlooking something? I cannot remove this blog post from my Games page. I.e. the 'remove' link does not work.
